Anti-abortion organizations hope to stop construction of new Planned Parenthood clinic
Posted Friday, January 05, 2007 2:46:42 PM by Blog57 Team
Two anti-abortion groups are joining forces to attempt a construction boycott of a planned 6,700-square-foot Planned Parenthood facility in Lufkin. In an e-mail sent to his supporters last week and forwarded to The Lufkin Daily News by an anonymous source, Chris Danze, president of Texas Contractors and Suppliers for Life, referrred to the clinic as a "killing compound" and asked for help in locating anti-abortion contractors or suppliers in the Lufkin area. The Houston Coalition for Life pledged, in an e-mail to its supporters, to join Danze's crusade. Abortions are not performed at the current Lufkin clinic on Frank Avenue, and Michelle Green, health clinic director, said there are no plans to provide abortions at the new clinic. The clinic is being constructed on Shands Drive, after a capital campaign raised $1.5 million in less than four months....

Arguments begin on abortion law / Likely swing vote Kennedy doesn't tip his hand on controversial late-term method

Two hours of oral argument on a federal "partial birth" abortion ban at the Supreme Court on Wednesday showed that the justices are intensely focused on the procedure's medical details and health implications -- but produced few clues as to how they might rule. As expected, the court's four most liberal members, Justices John Paul Stevens, David Souter, Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer, sounded skeptical about the statute. Of the court's conservatives, only Chief Justice John Roberts said much at all, asking questions that implied the law should be upheld. That left plenty of time for Justice Anthony Kennedy, whom both sides in the case consider the likely swing vote, to listen to the lawyers and air his concerns -- though he did not tip his hand. Questioning both sides At one point, Kennedy, who dissented when the court struck down a similar state ban in 2000, repeated a concern he voiced in that case....

Abortion: Keep legal
Posted Tuesday, November 07, 2006 12:47:11 PM by Blog57 Team
Women have fought for their rights for decades now, and abortion is, and should/continue to be, one of them. What a woman does with her own body is nobody else's business. If abortion clinics were closed down then people would be forced to go to back alley clinics. Let's keep abortion safe and legal. On Jan. 22, 1973 the U.S. Supreme Court handed down its decision in Roe v. Wade. Roe v. Wade states a woman has the right to have an abortion without state interference particularly during the first three months of pregnancy. However, anti-abortionists have been working hard to reverse Roe. Their protests and rallies have made it extremely difficult, and, in some cases, impossible to reach a clinic in 80 percent of the counties in America....

Anti-abortion activists contend city violated right to free speech

Two anti-abortion activists are suing York City officials for allegedly violating their constitutional right to free speech outside Planned Parenthood's South Beaver Street office. Edward Snell of Harrisburg and John McTernan of Millerstown filed separate lawsuits in U.S. Middle District Court in Harrisburg Tuesday claiming York City officials violated their right to peacefully assemble outside the Planned Parenthood of Central Pennsylvania office at 728 South Beaver St. in 2004 and 2005. The two men, who call themselves Christian pro-life counselors, say they were trying to speak to pregnant women about the life of a fetus and abortion alternatives, but they were repeatedly stopped by police. Both suits named Mayor John Brenner, the city, Police Commissioner Mark Whitman and other police officers....

TACOMA: Anti-abortion protesters prompt complaints to police
Posted Thursday, October 26, 2006 10:46:18 PM by Blog57 Team
Police were called Tuesday morning to deal with a group of anti-abortion protesters in the 800 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Tacoma. Police went to the scene because the protesters were blocking driveways and doorways, Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum said. There also were some complaints about the graphic nature of some of the signs. The officers explained the rules to the protesters. No arrests were made, and the protesters left a short time later, Fulghum said. ....

Abortion Float Denied

A pastor who wants to promote his anti-abortion campaign won't be able to do it in York's annual Halloween parade. For the past several years pastor Jim Grove has entered a float displaying graphic pictures of aborted fetuses and other pro-life messages. The YWCA took over the parade from the City of York this year. That means the private organization doesn't have to protect Grove's first amendment rights. It rejected grove's application for his float. The parade guidelines say displays must fit into the event's family-friendly theme. “It's a Halloween parade it's about blood and guts. It's about death. It's about mayhem. It's about scary things. I thought this venue would be somewhat accepted," says Pastor Jim Grove, Anti-Abortion Activist. Grove says he plans to display his pro-life message on the public sidewalks during the parade, holding signs and handing out literature....

Lynda Lovejoy Chokes on Gays and Abortion: Compares gays to children born with deformities

Lynda Lovejoy, who is running for Navajo Nation President, was asked direct questions about her positions on abortion and gay marriage at a candidate forum held in Albuquerque on Oct. 10, 2006. In her tortured remarks, she compared gay people to children born with deformities. She also could not answer a direct question about where she stood on those issues, and yet she is seeking to be the first female president of the Navajo Nation. If she can't even answer simple questions about her faith, religious affiliation and positions on abortion and gay marriage, she'll face a very tough time as the next president of the Navajo Nation. She'll have to deal with members of Congress, deliver testimony and answer much tougher questions than abortion and gay marriage. Lovejoy didn't even answer the question about what her religious background was, which is Catholic (according to her family members) and gave a butchered tirade about nothing....

Morrison Not Saying Whether He Would End Abortion Record Pursuit
Posted Friday, October 06, 2006 6:46:37 PM by Blog57 Team
Democrat Paul Morrison isn't saying whether he would drop the pursuit of patient records from two abortion clinics if he's elected attorney general. Morrison is running against Republican incumbent Phill Kline, and he has harshly criticized Kline for seeking information from the records of 90 patients. Morrison says it's an invasion of privacy. That has led to the impression that Morrison would drop the pursuit Kline has even said it during debates. But Morrison now tells The Topeka Capital-Journal that he never said that. Spokesman Mark Simpson wouldn't answer that question specifically. He says Morrison won't speculate because he will have enough work to do fixing the office. Kline spokeswoman Sherriene Jones says Morrison is back pedaling....

Abortion, race, environment on Supreme Court's agenda
Posted Saturday, September 30, 2006 12:46:20 PM by Blog57 Team
WASHINGTON - The Supreme Court returns Monday to a docket that includes important cases on abortion, race and the environment, and by next spring, when the court adjourns, it should be much clearer how new Justices John G. Roberts and Samuel Alito have changed things. The key cases in particular will test the principles the new justices swore allegiance to during their confirmation hearings: precedent, restraint and judicial modesty. Depending on how they and the other justices rule, the laws in those areas could be altered dramatically. In the abortion case, the court could make it much more difficult to challenge restrictions on women's ability to terminate pregnancies. The race cases, which involve whether school districts - like colleges and universities - should be able to consider ethnicity in their quest to foster diversity, could affect the reach of the landmark affirmative action cases from 2003....

Judge Rejects Ohio Law Restricting Use of Abortion Pill
Posted Saturday, September 30, 2006 2:46:22 AM by Blog57 Team
CINCINNATI (AP) -- A federal judge ruled an Ohio law restricting the use of an abortion-inducing pill is unconstitutional because it is vague and could jeopardize women's health. Wednesday's decision in U.S. District Court was a victory for providers of abortion services in Ohio, who sued in 2004, saying the law was unclear and contained no exception to allow use of the drug in cases where a woman's health is at risk. The law, which was supposed to take effect two years ago, would make it illegal for doctors to prescribe mifepristone, or RU-486, after the seventh week of pregnancy. Judge Susan Dlott ruled the law was confusing and doctors couldn't be expected to understand its requirements. "This is another piece of legislation that is intended to scare doctors away from providing reproductive health care," said Al Gerhardstein, an attorney for plaintiff Planned Parenthood....
