The whys and whatnots of baby's bedding
Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 11:02:30 AM by Rose Martins

Fitting out the baby's room for that expected arrival is a lot of fun. The parents-to-be spend hours picking out just the right colour scheme, designs and themes, crib, furniture and all the accessories for the nursery. Baby bedding

There is so much available, from cost effective discount baby items to luxurious, expensive designer items. Choosing bedding for your baby's cot or cradle is a decision all on it's own. What colours? What designs? Should you get something custom made that's unique to your nursery? Or should you rather go for a ready made set, including a sheet, blanket, duvet and bumper?

There are exclusive baby bedding boutiques to help you in your quest for the perfect choice for your baby, that offer luxury bedsets. But nothing comes for free. Be prepared to spend a large amount on your baby's bedding when deciding to purchase from an exclusive baby bedding boutique. Some of the exclusive baby bedding boutiques also offer a range of lower priced items at more reasonable prices.

Online shopping is a great resource for baby bedding boutiques offering cut prices. When making your final selection of baby bedding, be sure to read the fine print carefully. Baby's bedding should be made from natural fabrics that are kind to a baby's skin, and should be easily washed and tumbledried. The bedding should also fit the baby's cot or crib properly so that there is no danger of the bedding becoming loose with your baby's movements, causing a possible danger of suffocation.

They do more than Veterans Day

The American Legions and VFWs in Morgan County spent most of Friday and Saturday presenting ceremonies, holding memorials at schools and providing guest speakers, flags and refreshments for Veterans Day. They will repeat the process on Memorial Day. But if you think that members spin their wheels the rest of the year exchanging war stories and putting on military services for the dead think again. Don Simpson, president of Mooresville VFW Post 1111 Mens Auxiliary, said he sometimes puts in 90 hours a week on benefits for youth and veterans. I probably drive 42 miles round-trip 10 times a year for fundraisers and special events. He said the prime obligation of the VFW and American Legion is to make life better for vets and their families. Orphaned or abandoned children and youth also rank high on the priority list....

Bed-Sharing May Up SIDS Risk
Posted Friday, November 10, 2006 6:47:29 PM by Blog57 Team
Babies who die of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDS, while sharing beds may have a risky sleep profile, a new study shows. SIDS is the sudden and unexplained death of an infant under 1 year of age. Its exact cause isn't known. The new study, published in Pediatrics, comes a year after the American Academy of Pediatrics issued its latest SIDS prevention recommendations. Take a moment to review those recommendations: Put infants to sleep on their backs. Put babies to sleep on a firm sleep surface (a crib mattress covered by a sheet). Don't put soft objects such as pillows, quilts, or comforters under a sleeping baby. Keep soft objects, including pillows, quilts, blankets, and stuffed animals, out of babies' sleeping environment....

New evidence says SIDS caused by abnormality in the brainstem
Posted Friday, November 03, 2006 10:48:09 PM by Blog57 Team
According to a new study by researchers in the U.S. some babies who die from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) do so because of an abnormality in the serotonin system in their brains. This abnormality say the researchers makes the babies more susceptible to SIDS. Sudden infant death syndrome is the leading cause of post neonatal infant death in the United States and despite intensive research, the exact cause of SIDS remains rather elusive. The researchers at the Children's Hospital in Boston say their discovery will confirm that SIDS is a disease process that's biologically based and not a mystery. David Paterson, an instructor at the Harvard Medical School affiliated to the hospital, and one of the study's authors, suggests a complex combination of factors may be the cause of the abnormalities and they are unlikely to be exclusively genetic or environmental....

Baby critically burned in crib fire

EL PASO, Texas Investigators say a 16-month-old girl was critically burned when a mosquito net draped over her crib caught fire on a space heater. April Arroyo was flown to a burn center at Lubbock's University Medical Center after yesterday morning's fire in El Paso County. Fire officials say the baby suffered first- and second-degree burns to her left cheek and arms. She remained in critical condition yesterday. El Paso County Sheriff's spokesman Rick Glancey says the baby's mother noticed the crib was on fire and fled the house with baby. The house located between San Elizario and Fabens then became engulfed in flames. The girl's parents were not injured. Fire officials say people should be careful to keep flammable materials such as drapes and bedding away from space heaters....

Care Bears, Pals Want to Make Friends With Hispanic Shoppers

The bilingual toy is not a new concept for major toy companies -- they're boldly going where Dora the Explorer first tread at the turn of the century -- but the idea is starting to pick up steam as the U.S. Hispanic population continues to grow. The Care Bears, a brand of stuffed toys that enjoyed billion-dollar success in the early 1980s and has recently made a comeback, is introducing the Amigo Bear, a bilingual teddy bear slated to hit major retailers nationwide this month.Last month, Fisher-Price unveiled its T.M.X. Elmo toy, which also comes in a Spanish-speaking version. The T.M.X Elmo is a ramped-up version of the wildly successful Tickle Me Elmo that debuted 10 years ago. This isn't just a game for the big kids in the toy business. Some newcomers are taking the bilingual toy concept a step further, pulling at the heartstrings of Hispanic consumers through dolls that sing traditional songs, tell Latin American folk tales and have books that seal the deal....

Cotton is best fabric for your baby's skin
Posted Saturday, October 07, 2006 10:46:22 PM by Blog57 Team
Q . Are organic fabrics better for my baby? A . Not necessarily. While organic baby clothes and bedding are popping up everywhere, you don't need them. Whether it's organic or not, the best fabric for babies is 100 percent cotton that's soft, lightweight and snug. Skip man-made fibers, like polyester and spandex, which can irritate sensitive skin. (Also, bedding that's free of synthetic materials may reduce a baby's chance of developing asthma, according to a recent study.) Keep in mind: "Some organic fabrics, like wool, can actually cause skin irritation for some babies," says Andrea Lynn Cambio, M.D., a New York City dermatologist. ....

Simple precautions can lessen risk of SIDS

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) claims the lives of two babies every week in Canada. October is SIDS Awareness Month and the City of Hamilton's Public Health Services wants caregivers of infants to know that simple precautions can lessen the risk of a SIDS death. SIDS is the unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant. It is one of the leading causes of death in Canada for infants between the ages of one month and one year. SIDS strikes one in every 2,000 live born babies in Canada. Since recommending placing babies on their backs to sleep, the number of SIDS cases has decreased significantly. SIDS Canada provides a number of useful tips for caregivers of infants to help lessen the risk of SIDS. All you need to create a safe sleep environment is the crib, a firm mattress, and a tightly fitted sheet....

Nurseries are anything but infantile

Expectant parents can easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars for custom or upscale bedding, cribs, dressers, rocking recliners, coordinated soft mobiles, lighting and toy bags that double as flower-filled wall hangings. Bedding, in fact, can cost more than the crib. Parents-to-be will find everything from dragonfly-print fabrics to toile to exquisite silks and satins embroidered with brightly colored flowers for bedding choices. "I'm looking for something different," Rica Hansing says, as she shops at USA Baby/Child Space in Castleton, Ind., for bedding for her daughter's convertible crib. Hansing's daughter Emma is almost 2, which means she's ready to graduate from the crib's "green and white toile with some chenille" to something more sophisticated for her toddler bed....
