| Buying the perfect baby gift | | Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 11:11:14 AM by Rose Martins | When buying a baby gift, there is no shortage of choice. There are discount baby stores, medium range baby stores, expensive baby stores and designer baby boutiques, covering all sides of the price spectrum, from dirt cheap to ridiculously expensive.
Baby boutiques offer baby shower lists whereby the parents-to-be can make a selection of things that they would like for their baby. Friends and family, who might be struggling with ideas of what gift to buy for the baby, can visit the store and select an item off the baby shower gift list.
Retail baby stores and online retail baby stores also offer baby gift baskets, a pre-packed selection of choice items for a specified price. Unique designer stores offer personalized baby gifts made to order. These personalized gifts often boast the baby's name and a design of your choice.
It's unusual to find two of a kind personalized items at a designer baby gift store. If it's not a first baby, christening and baptism baby gifts are sometimes luxury items. The baby already has what it needs, having had it passed down from older siblings, so people buy gifts that are less practical and more luxurious.

Photographer Birkhead is fighting to prove he's the biological father of Smith's baby girl Dannielynn, but his public statements about his alleged romance and the ongoing war between the former friends has upset the actress/model - and she was perplexed when Birkhead recently sent her a box full of baby gifts. She says, "He has sent me a box of baby clothes. Inside was a book that said 'My Family,' and in the back of it, it had a picture of me and him... It's kinda scary in a way." In her latest TV attack on Birkhead, which aired on US news show Entertainment Tonight last night, Smith fired back at strong claims her ex made during a recent appearance on CNN show Larry King Live....

| | | Campbell's $1,000 baby gifts baffling | | Posted Thursday, November 23, 2006 12:46:40 PM by Blog57 Team | | I can't think of a more curious recent policy idea than Gordon Campbell's plan to give every baby born after this year $1,000 toward post-secondary education. The government will hang on to the money, the premier told the enthusiastic Liberal party convention crowd in Penticton. When the babies make it out of diapers and through high school, they'll get the money with interest. Figure something like $2,000. The $41-million-a-year plan sounds great. Who doesn't like the idea of the government starting savings accounts for toddlers? But it's a very odd bit of public policy. Campbell has decided, inexplicably, that a tuition subsidy for students starting their post-secondary education in 2025 is a spending priority today. Not fixing more knees this year or homelessness or cutting taxes, but aid for individual students 18 years from now.... | |

| | | Use of puppets survives centuries | | Posted Wednesday, October 11, 2006 12:46:34 PM by Blog57 Team | | Puppets existed in the 1300s, but the only record of them is from some illustrations and stories. By the 16th century, there were puppet shows similar to the later "Punch and Judy" shows. It was in the 18th century that puppets became well-known. Some were made as caricatures of famous people and performed in shows with political messages. Paper and cardboard were used to make the puppets. In the 19th century, puppet shows became very popular, especially the slapstick "Punch and Judy" shows. Glove puppets - simple gloves with heads - were sometimes used. By the 1900s, puppets were made that represented the characters from old stories like "Hansel and Gretel," as well as modern puppets made to look like the Three Stooges, the Howdy Doody gang or even presidents. One unusual pair of puppets were made to look like President John F.... | |

So personal trainer Matt Elder's idea for a Beanie Baby Boot Camp, which offered a 45-minute fitness class for the price of a couple of Beanie Babies that would be going into the hands of children in Iraq, sounded like just the ticket. Elder recruited Wolff and about a dozen other people to participate in his inaugural workout, and he collected hundreds of Beanie Babies to ship to American soldiers serving in Iraq to hand out to local children as a good-will gesture. While the 23-year-old is still looking for the money to send the first 360 stuffed animals to Iraq, he is making plans to turn the boot camp into a monthly event....
