It's a great, big party for Tony Bennett
Posted Saturday, November 11, 2006 10:47:35 PM by Blog57 Team
The year 1926 was a magical one for jazz. In May, in Alton, Ill., Cleota Davis and her dentist husband, Miles, had a baby boy they named after daddy. Four months later, in a North Carolina town with the positively quaint name of Hamlet, the Coltrane family welcomed a newborn named John. And in August that year, in Queens, N.Y., Anthony Dominick Benedetto was born. He probably arrived in the world like everybody else, naked and crying, but on most days since he's worn a natty suit and a winner's smile because, well, he is Tony Bennett, after all. On Thursday, Bennett came to the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood to blow out some candles with some good friends. His actual birthday came and went a few months ago, but, well, he is Tony Bennett after all. As a playful Stevie Wonder said from the stage, "It's the longest birthday I've ever known in my life." ....

By Ben Cohen: Earlier this week, Floyd Mayweather stopped by Joe Goossen's gym in Los Angeles to perform a public workout. Regarded almost universally as the best pound for pound fighter on the planet, it was a chance to see a modern legend at work. This weekend, he takes on the formidable opponent, and WBC champion Carlos Baldomir. And it is a fight he must be well prepared for. The Argentinean strong man beat Zab Judah, and Arturo Gatti to get his shot at Mayweather, no small feat by any standard, and a strong indication that he will be no push over. Baldomir walks around close to 180lbs, and will be by far the biggest and strongest opponent Mayweather has ever fought. But Mayweather is a special fighter, and in more ways than many give him credit for, especially after witnessing him train....

A 17-month-old baby has been found dead in a car in the parking lot of the University of Cape Town, police said on Saturday. Captain Randall Stoffels said the father of the child — he would not reveal its gender — was supposed to take it to creche on Friday morning, but instead went to the university. When the baby's mother went to fetch the child from creche at 1pm, she was told the baby was not there. She found the infant in her husband's car at the university at 3pm. Paramedics declared it dead. A post-mortem would be held to establish the cause of death. Stoffels would not disclose the father's position at the university, would not say where the family was from and refused to release their names and that of the creche. He said an inquest docket was being investigated....

We were lying in each other's arms in my bed, staring at the ceiling. It was several months after he had asked me for my phone number at a party in a mutual friend's backyard. He and I, both in our early 30s, had had serious relationships in our 20s that failed — a marriage in my case. And, after having considered ourselves jaded, we were now enjoying the intoxicating early days of a romance that was going well. Obstacles had failed to present themselves; our perspectives opened outward, with no end in sight. It was a time of seemingly endless potential. “I don't know," I said, feeling my body turn simultaneously hot and cold with terror and excitement. He said, “We'd be good parents, I think." Our conversation turned to other plans, but I filed this moment away....

PARIS, Oct 2, 2006 (AFP) - China debuted at Paris fashion week Sunday when a Chinese designer not only became the first to take part but opened the eight-day showcase of some of the industry's top names.     Frankie Xie's label Jefen initiated the official ready-to-wear spring-summer 2007 season with a youthful vibe, followed by Balmain's seductive elegance and the enigmatic Martin Margiela.     Pretty hand-painted motifs of peach tree flowers hinted at the Chinese origins of the collection for Jefen, established in Beijing in 2000, but the look was largely Western-oriented.     "We use a lot of Chinese technology such as hand embroidery, Chinese fabrics or Chinese silk. The prints are Chinese designs," the 46-year-old designer said afterwards through an interpreter....

T HE FIRST TIME HELEN DOMAGALSKI stood at her mother's grave in Youngstown's Calvary Cemetery, she was so overcome with emotion that she wept like a baby. "I can't tell you what I felt," said Domagalski, a petite, brown-haired grandmother who seems cheerfully young despite her 81 years. "I just cried and cried and cried." The tears that flowed that day in 2005 had been a long time coming. Not since March 17, 1925 ? the day Domagalski was born ? had she been in such proximity to the woman who had given her life. "I was born on March 17, and my mother died on March 18," said Domagalski, who lives in Modesto, Calif. "So I never knew her." Neither had Domagalski gotten the chance to know her siblings or father. Shortly after she was born, she was adopted by Peter and Irene Yuth, a childless couple who lived in the Cleveland area....
