Planning your baby shower, with a little help
Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 11:17:41 AM by Rose Martins

A baby shower can be as simple or as lavish as you want. There are no rules and no standards when it comes to planning a baby shower. There are even event planners who will plan your baby shower for you.

Baby showerThe baby shower planner has a fortune of ideas, and will be more than happy to plan with you, according to your requirements. Let's start with the theme. The theme of your baby shower will be carried right the way through, starting with the invitation.

The invitation will follow the colour scheme and design that has been decided on, and can include a poem. Then you need to decide on decorations and centerpieces for your baby shower, as well as the baby shower cake. You then need to chose baby shower party favors from the catalogue presented to you by your baby shower event planner. What will be the program for your baby shower?

Will you be playing games? A common favourite is to write a poem with each gift, and the mother-to-be has to guess either who the gift is from by what is written in the poem, or what the gift is. Using an event planner to arrange your baby shower, is a huge help.

You don't need to worry about any of the supplies, from invitations to menu to games and treats.

Baby shower featured moon pies for mom-to-be

My best friend was having a baby. Once we stopped gushing with excitement over the news, I realized I had a project of my own: throwing her a shower. The problem? I had never hosted a baby shower. To compound things, my friend is a professional cook. Her husband is a chef. All their friends (and therefore about half of my guest list) are also professional cooks at some top restaurants. Clearly, a bag of pretzels, a cake from the supermarket and that fruity punch that only ever seems to get served at baby showers weren't going to cut it. ....

Thelma Domenici: No shame in hosting baby shower
Posted Sunday, November 12, 2006 6:47:11 AM by Blog57 Team
Dear Thelma: My son's girlfriend of five years is pregnant. They eventually will be getting married, probably after the baby is born. She has asked me to have a shower for her and I gladly said yes. Now a co-worker has said it is inappropriate for a grandma to give a shower. Who is right? Answer: Contemporary etiquette does allow family members to host showers in celebration of the new life. You can feel perfectly correct in doing so. There was a time when it was not considered proper for a family member to host a shower. Because the point of a shower is to provide the honoree with gifts, it appeared self-serving if an immediate family member hosted. However, those ideas, and the rules along with them, have changed. Enjoy hosting the shower and the new grandchild. Dear Thelma: My son will be getting married out of town where his fianc‚e's family lives....

NONFICTION Middle ground for dealing with TV
Posted Sunday, November 05, 2006 10:47:17 AM by Blog57 Team
Beginning with a common and seemingly innocuous baby-shower gift - an educational video - the authors of "The Elephant in the Living Room" examine television's influence on children and teens. Their conclusions will be revelatory for both those who grew up with the TV on all the time and those whose parents banned the "idiot box" from the house altogether. Neither, apparently, is the right approach. Television is inherently neither evil nor harmless, they explain. It is a tool that, when mishandled, can cause serious damage. Or, when used properly, it can teach, inspire and educate children. "Sesame Street," "Blue's Clues," "Nova" and cooking programs are examples given of excellent "educational" shows. Despite identifying terrific programming for younger children, the authors, who are directors of the Child Health Institute, do not recommend any television for children younger than 2, and they offer some impressive studies to back that up....

Largest-Ever Study of Baby Boomers and Mature Consumers Finds 60 Percent Plan to Live in Current Home During the Next
Posted Sunday, October 29, 2006 2:47:17 PM by Blog57 Team
Key findings of the largest, most comprehensive study ever conducted of baby boomers and mature customers show that a majority of those 50 and older want to stay in their current homes for the foreseeable future and plan improvements or a remodel during that time. Life events common to the 50-plus population -- retirement, the birth of a grandchild, caring for an elderly parent, an adult child moving home -- often are triggers for projects to improve home comfort and functionality in anticipation of spending more time at home enjoying hobbies and entertaining friends and family. (Logo: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030502/HOMEDEPOTLOGO ) Conducted by Focalyst, the study gathered data from more than 30,000 consumers from the baby boom generation and older. The Home Depot®, the world's largest home improvement retailer, sponsored the study to gain insight into the housing preferences and home improvement needs among this audience of more than 125 million Americans....

Jen's Dream Baby Bash

Imagine you're having a baby shower... But your guest list includes some of the biggest names in Hollywood. Just imagine the presents... Superman star Tobey Maguire's wife-to-be, Jennifer Meyer, had her baby shower at her folks' Malibu mansion at the weekend. We should mention at this point that she is also the daughter of Universal Studios' president Ron Meyer. And her guest list was what dreams are made of. Jennifer Aniston and Courteney Cox got a lift together (as mates do) and joined the likes of Kate Hudson, Demi Moore and Jennifer Garner. The party of 50 guests basked on the lawn, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, while they supped cool lemonade and ate organic hors d'oeuvres....

The latest in baby fashion: Celebrity toupees
Posted Monday, October 09, 2006 10:47:23 AM by Blog57 Team
"This baby and millions of other male babies just like him spend months suffering from shame and disgrace associated with male infantile baldness," Bill Hader intoned in a "Saturday Night Live" commercial in February. "That's why our scientists at Nelson Pediatrics developed these -- baby toupees." The commercial was fake, but now the product is real -- and not as an "SNL" spin-off, either. Graham Farrar, co-founder of BabyToupee, was hatching the bald baby business before "SNL" writers ever dreamed up the ad. "It actually predates that by quite a bit," he says, noting that the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based business registered the domain name in 2004. "It was inspired, in all honesty, by drinking too much," he says, recalling a lubricated brainstorming session with cohorts Peter Kyriacou, Matt Meyer and (the unrelated) Thomas Meyer....
