Pregnant women delaying birth

Berlin: Expectant mothers in Germany are doing what they can to put off giving birth until January 1 when a generous government aid programme takes effect. The media has been filled with tips and warnings from doctors and midwives about holding off birth until January 1. While experts have warned women to refrain from medical intervention to delay births, they acknowledge the allure of a financial incentive worth up to 25,200 euros (Dh121,631). "We're bracing for a siege on New Year's Day and will have a full staff on hand," said Klaus Vetter, chief doctor at Berlin's Vivantes hospital. Worried about a shrinking population and a birth rate at a post-war low in 2005, the government in September introduced the law to encourage working couples to have children....

Book Review: History of Australia's birth as a penal colony is worthwhile

Australia's most widely known author, Thomas Keneally, tells Australia's story in "A Commonwealth of Thieves: The Improbable Birth of Australia." Chance are, if you've read anything on the colonization of Australia, it was Charles Nordhoff's and James Norman Hall's "Botany Bay." That 1941 adventure book for youth was penned by the same duo who romanticized the mutiny on the Bounty, which occurred almost at the same time in the 1780s. Botany Bay, however, was only the target when England sent its first flotilla of ships full of prisoners for Australia, a spot explored earlier by Capt. James Cook. When Arthur Phillip, who commanded the first flotilla, entered Botany Bay, however, he found the shoreline too marshy to settle. Phillip switched to the harbor to the north, called Port Jackson, selecting the site that would become Sydney....

A pregnant woman who survived the shooting at an Amish school earlier this month has given birth and named the baby after one of the girls who was killed, a newspaper reported Sunday. The 22-year-old woman, who would give her name only as Lydia, gave birth Oct. 10, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. The child is named Naomi Rose, after 7-year-old Naomi Rose Ebersol, one of five girls fatally shot by Charles Carl Roberts IV. The gunman took over the West Nickel Mines Amish School on Oct. 2 but released Lydia, along with three other women with infants, and 15 male students. He then tied up and shot 10 young girls, killing five of them, before killing himself. Lydia, a teacher at another nearby school, had gone to the West Nickel Mines school that day to visit her sister-in-law, Emma Mae Zook, who eventually ran to call for help....

Campaigners fighting to save a threatened birthing centre in Hampshire have sent a petition with more than 1,500 signatures to Westminster in a last ditch attempt to stop the closure. The Choose It or Lose It campaigners gathered together outside Romsey Birthing Centre yesterday morning to hand the petition to Romsey MP Sandra Gidley, who will take it to the head of maternity services in Westminster. This petition is the latest in a series of protests by mothers campaigning against proposals for a shake-up of maternity services across south-west Hampshire. ....

TOKYO, Japan (Reuters) -- A Japanese woman in her 50s gave birth to a child she had carried for her daughter, who was unable to conceive as she had her womb removed due to cancer, an obstetrician said on Sunday. The case is likely to further stir debate in Japan about births by surrogate mothers, which both the government and a key medical association oppose. Yahiro Netsu, the head of a maternity clinic in the central prefecture of Nagano, told a news conference that the woman gave birth in the first half of 2005 using an egg from her daughter and sperm from the daughter's husband, both in their 30s. Kyodo news agency said it was the first time in Japan that a woman has acted as a surrogate mother for the child of her daughter -- effectively delivering her grandchild....
