THE director general of home affairs was ordered by the Port Elizabeth High Court yesterday to pay all the legal costs of a Motherwell woman who battled for more than two years to get an unabridged birth certificate for her daughter. Nomtandazo Willie of Ngqankosi Street in NU 3 asked the court last year to force the department to issue the birth certificate to her daughter, Nokutula Willie, after having failed to get one from the departments Port Elizabeth office since March 19, 2004. Willie told the High Court her 15-year-old daughter had been injured in a car crash in February, 2004. She lodged a claim on behalf of her daughter with the Road Accident Fund, but was told she needed to provide an unabridged birth certificate with the claim. Her lawyer, Steven Velthuisen, requested the certificate from home affairs and paid for it, but despite many visits to home affairs and letters, no birth certificate was forthcoming....

Scrap routine scans say midwives

ROUTINE scans given to women in labour should be scrapped, midwives have claimed in a move that has sparked fears for the safety of mothers and babies. Gillian Smith, Scottish national officer of the Royal College of Midwives, believes the move would prevent medical staff interfering with the process of natural birth and increase women's chances of delivering their babies without forceps or Caesareans. But doctors say the scans give them the best opportunity to see if there are problems with a baby during labour. Around 95% of women who give birth in a Scottish hospital undergo a routine admission cardiotocograph when they arrive on the ward. The scan, also known as electronic foetal monitoring, requires the woman to lie still for at least 20 minutes....
