Britain's 'Asbo tsar' plans to give councils powers to force compulsory parenting courses on parents of problem children. Ordering parents to attend such courses is currently available only by recourse to the courts. In an interview with The Observer, Louise Casey, the government's 'respect co-ordinator', launches a ferocious defence of the government's respect agenda. She said those who warn that Anti-Social Behaviour Orders have become a 'badge of honour' were acting 'irresponsibly'. ....

Joy of parenting turns to fear

Many poems celebrate the joys of having children. Michigan poet Jeff Vande Zande reminds us that adults make mistakes, even with children they love, and that parenting is about fear as well as joy. Clean Her small body shines with water and light. Giggling, she squeals "daddy," splashes until his pants darken. Five more minutes, he thinks, stepping out quickly, pouring himself a drink, not expecting to return to find her slipped under, her tiny face staring up through the undulating surface. Before he can move, or drop his scotch, she raises her dripping head, her mouth a perfect O....

Parenting: Athletes stay home for schooling

INDIANAPOLIS -- A typical Tuesday for Steele Johnson, a potential Olympic diver, features training from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., followed by an hour of massage therapy. The schedule allows two hours of home-schooling in the morning, then more at night. Steele, of Carmel, Ind., is 10 years old. The youth underscores a trend, encouraged by coaches and parents, of home-schooling in the belief that the conventional classroom holds back some athletes. Home-school advocates say they oppose the rigid school day, not education. Nine of 10 athletes at USA Diving's national training center in Indianapolis are home-schooling. Ron O'Brien, high performance director for USA Diving, told them divers in other countries -- notably diving powerhouse and 2008 Olympic host China -- were logging more hours training....

JOHN ROSEMOND: AFFIRMATIVE PARENTING: Immediate action puts nighttime issues to bed

Q: I am adopting a 19-month-old child who has had problems going to sleep on her own since the day I brought her home. At first, I sat next to her while she went to sleep. Two months ago, because of upheaval in my life, she was put in foster care for 10 days. Ever since, she screams like crazy if I even take her in her bedroom. She has been sleeping with me since, and I'm not getting a good night's sleep. With all of the changes that have happened in her life, however, I hate to put her in her own bed and make her cry herself to sleep. What should I do? A: I realize how tempting it is to take the easy way out where bedtime is concerned. It's the end of a long day; you're tired; and so on. Nonetheless, instant-gratification strategies like rocking an infant to sleep, lying down with or sitting with a child until she falls asleep, do nothing but create bigger problems in the long run....

Generations shape parenting and vice versa

When the 300 millionth resident of the United States appears this month, that person's life will be shaped, in part, by whether Mom and Dad are baby boomers, Gen-Xers or millennials, experts say. Someone who came of age when civil rights and the women's movement helped define the generation will have a very different take on life than someone who grew up a decade later listening to Madonna and watching MTV. "When you talk about generations, what you're really discussing is difference in attitudes," says Peter Francese, founder of American Demographics magazine and a demographic trends analyst for Oglivy & Mather, a New York ad agency. Such generational attitudes can't help but affect child rearing. If Mom and Dad are products of their times, this also frames the ways in which they parent....

JOHN ROSEMOND: AFFIRMATIVE PARENTING: Daughter's crib craving nothing to lose sleep over
Posted Thursday, September 28, 2006 10:46:06 AM by Blog57 Team
Q: My 31/2-year-old daughter still sleeps in a crib, loves it, and has shown no interest in sleeping in the big bed that sits, waiting, in her room. She's a great sleeper even though her favorite position is all scrunched up at one end. Is there any reason why we should make her move to a big bed besides the possibility of a permanently scrunched up neck? A: I'm going to assume that the side of the crib is down and that your daughter can get in and out by herself. Indeed, it's a tad unusual for a child this age to still be "cribbed," but given that this is her choice and that a "big bed" is available to her, I don't think this either is or will lead to a problem. If this was part of a general effort on your part to keep her in an infant state, that would be another story, but this situation doesn't fit that profile, obviously....

True responsible parenting

Christa Byker's Tuesday column ("Daycare: no substitute for parenting," Sept. 19) ignores an option that more people in the United States need to consider: not having children at all. Before China's recent economic boom, the United States (five percent of the world's population) consumed a third or more of the world's resources. Making more American babies means making more people that consume like Americans -- more people who drive inefficient vehicles, more people who ignore or fail to develop public transport options, more people who water their lawns during drought conditions, more people who buy consumer products produced in unhealthy, unsustainable factories... you get the idea. Sending children to daycare is not the real emancipatory option for women, even if that daycare is of a high quality....
