Symptoms and signs of being pregnant
Posted Monday, January 30, 2006 8:44:27 PM by Rose Martins

Home pregnancy tests are not always accurate. A test taken with a home pregnancy kit can sometimes show negative results while actually it should be positive, especially if it's really early days.Pregnancy

If you feel that you are showing signs of pregnancy, it's usually best to follow the home pregnancy test with a blood test, issued by your doctor. Symptoms in the early stage of pregnancy differ from woman to woman. Your baby's birth date is calculated from the date of your last period.

There are online pregnancy calenders that will send you week by week explanations of where you and your baby are at, together will photos of what your baby looks like at that stage of development. Twins can sometimes remain a hidden secret in the early ultrasounds.

One baby can be lying in front of the other and the second heartbeat is not always seen in the picture. But not for long….. The discovery that you are carrying twins can be exciting, but it can also be a challenge. With twins the pregnancy symptoms can sometimes be worse and the mother's stomach is for sure bigger.

Some mothers-to-be glow in pregnancy and really enjoy the experience. Other mothers-to-be have a more difficult time and are very happy to finally give birth.

Lighter babies more likely to be left-handed

Left-handedness is established or 'programmed' during a baby's early development in the womb, probably because of the amount of nutrition received during the pregnancy, according to new research by the University of Southampton. Researchers analysed 212 children between the ages of 14 and 16 for their 'handedness'. One in five of the children born at the lowest third of birth-weights was left-handed, compared with only 6 per cent of those at the highest third of birth-weights. There is some controversy about the relationship between birth-weight and handedness, as researchers are also unsure about the impact of birth order, gender and smoking in pregnancy. The Southampton team are confident that birth weight is crucial, saying the link persists even when other factors are taken into account....

Albany-- Slowly but surely, Georgia's teen pregnancy has declined in recent years. Still, it remains a growing concern in the Southwest Georgia Health District. The teen pregnancy rate here has increased for the past few years. Two women hope to change that through faith. From a small church in East Albany, two women want to open the door to some big changes in the city. "It's part of the vision of the church," says Pastor Betty Jackson. It's a vision that began long ago for Pastor Betty Jackson of First Apostolic and it's built on the words of the Bible. "The organization is called Mercy Without Judgement," says Jackson. Mercy Without Judgement will be a center for teenage mothers in Albany, a shelter that will give them a warm bed along with training on how to be good mothers. The goal is to help them find their way after an early life-changing moment....

SPECULATION is rife in Denmark that Princess Mary is pregnant again, after she appeared to suffer morning sickness at a recent function. Royal watchers were sent into a spin after the Tasmanian-born princess abruptly left a function in Russia and returned 15 minutes later looking pale and ill. Some believed the Crown Princess was suffering nausea and dizziness associated with the early stages of pregnancy. Many watchers also believed Mary had been making an effort to cover her tummy during recent public appearances, to cover a baby bump. And further speculation has been fuelled by the fact the Royal Palace has not denied rumours. A palace spokeswoman yesterday would not confirm or deny the pregnancy speculation by Danish newspapers and magazines....

Putting on a few extra pounds during pregnancy has been thought to be a normal and healthy part of the gestational process. But what happens when a woman gains too much weight, or too little? According to data published this month in Obstetrics & Gynecology, babies of women who gain more than the upper limit of Institute of Medicine (IOM)-recommended guidelines during their pregnancy may be subject to a myriad of adverse conditions immediately following birth. Translated, this means that a woman at a normal weight based on body mass index (BMI) standards has a cutoff of gaining up to 35 pounds, or she can be at risk for adverse neonatal outcomes. Normal-weight women who gain less than 15 pounds are also found to be at risk. ....

There is a "strong correlation" in Tanzania among HIV/AIDS, early school withdrawal and teenage marriage and pregnancy, according to a report conducted by the Tanzania Media Women's Association, IRIN/Reuters AlertNet reports. Girls at age 15 in Tanzania are allowed to get married with parental consent, and between 20% and 40% are married before adulthood, IRIN/Reuters AlertNet reports. The report, which is based on data of pregnant teenage girls and women who attended hospitals in the southeastern coast and central Morogoro provinces, finds that 76.6% of the study participants were aware of the health risks associated with HIV; however, most declined to receive an HIV test. In addition, more than 6% of the girls and women who did receive an HIV test were found to be HIV-positive. According to the report, the husbands of the pregnant girls and women included in the study "characteristically have had multiple partners, which puts the girls at the risk of being infected with HI[V]." Upendo Mwinchande, director of the AIDS Business Coalition Tanzania, said, "The education system is not protective of young girls," adding that "some as young as 11 years are withdrawn from school to be married off....
