Inflammatory bowel disease doubles the risk of pregnancy complications, a study says. Researchers found women with disorders such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis were more likely to have underweight and premature babies. The team from St Mary's Hospital in London analysed 12 studies published over the last 20 years, the Gut journal reported. But experts said modern treatments meant the risks were now low. The studies analysed involved almost 4,000 women with either Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis and more than 320,000 people without such conditions. ....

During a recent lunch with an old friend I couldn't stop complimenting her on how svelte and sculpted her figure looked. Her deadpan response: "It's the foundation." Whaaaa? Apparently her new bra had accomplished a feat of engineering that nature hadn't quite managed. Intrigued, I decided to do my own due diligence to find out how to get that gravity-defying look. If you haven't bought a bra lately, remember the key word is "lift." I went straight to two experts who have been putting women of all ages in bras for a total of more than 50 years. They agree that fit is all-important. Here are some of their tips: ....

Low GI diet in pregnancy may help babies

Mums-to-be who eat a low glycemic index diet may have healthier babies, a study from Australia suggests. The glycemic index of a food is the measure of how quickly blood sugar (glucose) rises after meals. In general, low-fibre foods containing simple starches, for example candy, have a higher glycemic index than foods rich in fibre and more complex carbohydrates, such as whole wheat bread and vegetables. ....

Weight gain between pregnancies dangerous

The question: Excessive weight has been linked to diabetes, heart disease, stroke, sleep problems, gallstones, osteoarthritis and even some types of cancer. Might women who gain weight between pregnancies face an increased likelihood of complications in their subsequent pregnancies? This study analyzed data on the pregnancies of 151,025 women, including their weights at the start of their first and second pregnancies, based on their body mass index (BMI, a measure of body fat calculated from height and weight). Women who gained 1 or 2 BMI points between pregnancies were up to 40 percent more likely to have developed high blood pressure or diabetes during their second pregnancy than were those who did not gain. An increase of 3 or more BMI points raised the risk of a stillbirth by 63 percent....

BRITNEY SPEARS went on a shopping spree last week (ends15OCT06) to celebrate losing over half the weight she gained while pregnant with her second child. The 24-year-old was browsing in Malibu, California boutique Planet Blue on 9 October (06) and snapped up 45 pieces for her new svelte frame. Five weeks after giving birth to son SUTTON PIERCE (12SEP06), Spears has reportedly dropped 26 pounds (12 kilograms) - without a trainer, diet pills or a nutritionist. A family friend of Spears says, "She is not treating herself with food and desserts anymore." According to an employee at the store, the TOXIC star gushed that she was "a whole new size - an eight," and needed "all new clothes." Spears weight reportedly jumped from 120 (54 kilograms) to 160 (73 kilograms) during her pregnancy, but has slimmed down with diet and exercise....

Report: Some pregnant teens deliberately smoking

Teenage girls in the U.K. are deliberately smoking during pregnancy because they know it lowers a baby's birth weight and believe it will reduce pain during labor and delivery, the Nursing Standard reported today. Teenagers have heard the warnings that smoking can lead to smaller babies but misinterpreted the information, the journal reported Public Health Minister Caroline Flint as saying during a meeting on obesity at last week's Labor Party conference in Manchester. "In this case childbirth is no less painful if your baby is low weight," Flint said in an e-mailed statement. "So smoking is not the answer, pain relief is." Health-care workers and young women have given Flint anecdotal reports of pregnant teenagers smoking so their babies would be smaller, the Department of Health said....

Mothers who gain weight after their first baby risk serious complications when they get pregnant again, a study has shown. Researchers who looked at more than 150,000 Swedish women found that weight gain between pregnancies was strongly associated with major problems. Even women who were not technically overweight but who put on pounds after their first birth were at risk. The findings were based on Body Mass Index (BMI) readings taken of the women at the beginning of their first and ....

Patient is own best advocate

For most of her 44 years of life, Jeanette Wells, of Belpre, has battled a mysterious, painful, and ever present enemy within her own body. I never, ever felt good when I was little, Wells said. I had a lot of trouble gaining weight and had little interest in food. I also experienced some nausea as a child. Her condition, pancreatic divisum, a birth defect of her pancreas, actually wasnt discovered or diagnosed until she was a married woman and mother, in her 30s. You know your own body better than anyone else, Wells said. Fight for yourself. If you do not feel like you are being heard or listened to by your doctor, pursue another aspect. Without a doubt, get a second opinion. As todays medical procedures, treatments, and options for medications become more diverse, highly technical, and sophisticated, it becomes less likely that any one physician will have all the latest medical information and skills....
