Teething Kings back on track

SYDNEY has kick-started its stuttering National Basketball League season with a confidence-boosting 96-83 victory over top-four rival Cairns at Sydney Entertainment Centre. Australia representative player Mark Worthington paced Sydney with 27 points as the Kings snapped a poor run of form to retain fourth place on the ladder with a 13-8 win-loss record. Sydney has found it extremely difficult to get points on the board in recent weeks, but coach Brian Goorjian knew his side simply had to find a way to defeat Cairns. "There's no doubt we're really struggling to score and it's a really difficult process we've got to go through to get baskets," he said. ....

South Africa: Teething Problems, Or Toothless?

THE impassioned and highly publicised plea by American actor George Clooney in September for the United Nations (UN) to confront the human rights abuses in Sudan seems to have fallen on deaf ears. Despite the call by the Hollywood celebrity -- as well as by a number of human rights organisations -- for action on the situation in Darfur, the recent meeting of the UN Human Rights Council has squandered this opportunity to respond to the very abuses it has been set up to address. Nearly 2-million people have been displaced in Darfur in the past three years, while close to 3-million people are now dependent on international humanitarian assistance. Yet the much anticipated Human Rights Council, established in June, has so far remained mute on Sudan, despite a special meeting that was held in September to examine human rights abuses there....

His prediction followed the 18-member assembly's unanimous decision to elect Mr Nelson Owusu 56, an Educationist as the Presiding Member during its inauguration. ....

Nigeria: Of Hugs, Sewing Machines & Targets

As Maryam Tamakloe, a twenty nine year old mother of two, gave her speech before the assembled heads of state, dignitaries and audience, she looked slight and fragile. But her message, delivered at the Special Summit of the African Union on AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria in May 2006, was strong and clear. Don't make me suffer because I'm living with the virus. Then, moved to tears, President Olusegun Obasanjo gave her that famous hug, offering to set her up in her own tailor's shop and in that one small action took a big leap forward in challenging stigma in Nigeria. This was the human face of the Special Summit, organised by the African Union, the UN System and development partners, where leaders met to review progress in challenging HIV, TB and Malaria since the Abuja Declarations of 2000 and 2001....

Ferrari test driver, Marc Gene topped the times at Jerez on Tuesday, ahead of the final race of the season next weekend in Brazil. The Spaniard competed 102 laps, his best a 1 minute 17.805 seconds, over a second up on fellow Ferrari test driver, Luca Badoer, who was second in the sister car. Both drivers were focusing on the development of Bridgestone tyres. Ferrari number one driver, Michael Schumacher will now join proceedings on Wednesday, when he takes over from Gene. Alex Wurz meanwhile was third for Williams, the Grove-based squad already looking ahead to 2007, as they continued work with a modified FW28 fitted with the Toyota V8 engine they will use next season. Wurz's best was a 1 minute 19.549 seconds, nearly 2 seconds off Gene. The Austrian completed 109 laps in total, while Narain Karthikeyan was also on track for Williams, although he managed only 11 laps due to mechanical problems....

Berlin: City overview
Posted Friday, October 06, 2006 6:46:22 AM by Blog57 Team
As both proud bastion of the Prussian kingdom and the dark heart of the Nazi empire then finally as a divided symbol of the Cold War, Berlin has earned its place in the history books of Europe. The past still looms large over Germany's capital- a scarred and sumptuous landscape that continues to awe and inspire - but as a city reunited, reborn and rejuvenated, the streets are once again abuzz with a creative energy and style that is uniquely Berlin. Even before the jubilant collapse of the wall in 1987, West Berlin's isolation in the heart of communist East Germany was a draw for international artists who tapped into the city's pre-war reputation as a haven for decadence and cultural innovation. Superstars David Bowie and Lou Reed were soon followed by Australian Bad Seed Nick Cave, rubbing shoulders with homegrown cinematic talent Wim Wenders....

The Access to Information Advisory Stakeholders Committee has called for several amendments to the Access to Information Act, saying that this would help lessen the teething pains dogging the implementation of the statute. Committee Chair Dr Carolyn Gomes, speaking at a press conference to mark "International Right to Know Day" at the Stella Maris Pastoral Centre in Kingston yesterday, called for amendments to the Act to include the establishment of an ATI Unit, or give the existing Unit powers for monitoring and implementation, while noting that there were grave concerns about the role and staffing of the Unit, which is now in the information ministry. According to Dr Gomes, "the vital role that could be played by a staffed ATI Unit has been missing from the process for the last 15 months"....

ASIA PACIFIC AIRLINES FACE NEW DELAYS OVER A380 SUPER JUMBO
Posted Friday, September 22, 2006 6:46:24 PM by Blog57 Team
SINGAPORE, Sept 22, 2006 (AFP) - Asia Pacific carriers led by launch customer Singapore Airlines grappled with further delays Friday in getting their Airbus A380 super jumbo planes into the air, with Korean Air vowing to seek compensation for the latest setback.     At the same time, none seemed ready to call it a day and cancel orders for what many analysts believe is an aircraft that could radically change the dynamics of the airline industry.     "We are disappointed at the delays. It causes concerns for us," Korean Air spokesman Shin Jin-Chul told AFP.     "But cancellation of the contract is out of the question. We will only ask for compensation in accordance with the contract," the spokesman said.     Korean Air is buying five of the double-decker planes....
